{Book Review} Beyonders

Beyonders by Brandon Mull

I guess my last post was to lead me up to Author Brandon Mull's new series "Beyonders" which I just finished.

Synopsis:

Jason Walker has often wished his life could be less predictable—until a routine day at the zoo ends with Jason suddenly transporting from the hippo tank into a strange, imperiled world. Lyrian holds dangers and challenges unlike anyplace Jason has ever known. The people all live in fear of their malicious wizard emperor, Maldor. The brave resistors who once opposed the emperor have been bought off or broken, leaving a realm where fear and suspicion prevail.

In his search for a way home, Jason meets Rachel, who was also mysteriously drawn to Lyrian from our world. With the help of a few scattered rebels, Jason and Rachel become entangled in a quest to piece together the word of power that can destroy the emperor and learn that their best hope to find a way home will be to save this world without heroes.

I was interested in seeing what this new series had to offer, since I loved Fablehaven. I am always weary though picking up a new series from a favorite writer. I think it's because I want the same book from them when I loved a particular series so much I want it to go on and on. So, sometimes I am disappointed, but this is a good book. I really enjoyed the characters in this book as I have in his past books. Some authors really never delve into their characters enough for you to learn to love them or even hate them, they just exist, but Brandon really helps you understand and feel his characters-I like that.

I would recommend this book to anyone 12 on up. He keeps his books clean for the most part which I like, there is violence and maybe I get a little too desensitizes by violence to notice it for what it is, but for the most part I think it's a good book I would let a twelve year old read.

My only negative is having to wait a year for the next one, and another year after that for the third! I wish writers and publishers would really "get" us readers. I understand the game their playing, but I think they would be pleasantly surprised that they would sell just as many books if they released them every few months instead of years! Try us!

4 Stars
Age 12 on up
Violence and intense material

Enjoy!
